Club & Teams

Q: What age groups does BK Owls cater for?
A: We field teams from Under 8s through to Youth League and U20s. Players are placed into age groups based on the year they were born, following Basketball Queensland competition guidelines.


Q: Does BK Owls run trials for team selection?
A: Yes. We hold trials before each season to assess player skills and team dynamics. Our focus is not only on scoring but also on coachability, teamwork, and effort. Trial details are communicated in advance.


Q: How are teams selected?
A: Teams are formed based on skill level, attitude, and team balance. Our goal is to place players where they can best develop and contribute. Selection is carried out by experienced coaches and club officials.


Q: What if my child is new to basketball?
A: We welcome players of all skill levels. Whether your child is a beginner or experienced, we aim to provide a supportive environment where they can learn, develop, and enjoy the game.



Training & Games

Q: When and where are training sessions held?
A: Training is usually held on Monday and Wednesday evenings between 5:30 PM – 8:30 PM. Venues include:

  • Iona College

  • Brisbane Adventist College

  • St Martins Primary

Final training schedules and locations are confirmed after trials and team formation.


Q: What are the game days and times?
A: Game times vary by age group:

  • U8 – U12 & U14 Boys: Saturdays, 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM

  • U14 Girls, U16 – U18: Friday evenings, 5:00 PM – 8:20 PM

  • Youth League Girls: Wednesday evenings, 5:00 PM – 8:20 PM

  • U20 Boys:Wednesday evenings, 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM

Q: Where are games played?
A: Games are typically played across Brisbane at these venues:

  • Rowland Cowan Stadium – Carina

  • Chandler (Sleeman Sports Complex) – Chandler

  • Anglican Church Grammar School (Churchie) – East Brisbane

Q: How long is a season?
A: The junior domestic competition runs in two seasons each year:

  • Summer Season: October – March (with a Christmas break)

  • Winter Season: April – September


Q: Are there breaks during school holidays?
A: Yes. Generally, there are no games or training during school holidays, though there may be occasional exceptions for grading rounds or rescheduled matches.



Registration & Fees

Q: How do I register my child for the season?
A: Registration details are shared via our website, email, and social media. Please register before the deadline to secure a spot.


Q: How does the waitlist work?
A: Joining the waitlist does not guarantee a place. Current members have priority through re-registration. If spaces open up, we will contact families in order of availability, on a first-come, first-served basis.


Q: What is the cost to play for a season?
A: Fees vary by age group and season length. They cover competition fees, training court hire, and administration. Uniforms are purchased separately. Exact fee information is provided during registration.


Q: Do you accept FairPlay vouchers?
A: Yes. Please provide voucher details during registration so they can be applied to your fees.



Uniforms & Equipment

Q: What uniform do players need?
A: Players are required to wear the official BK Owls playing uniform (jersey and shorts), available for purchase through the club. We also recommend Owls training gear for practices, along with proper basketball shoes.



Expectations & Development

Q: What is expected of parents and players?
A: We expect everyone to follow the club’s Code of Conduct, which emphasizes respect, sportsmanship, and teamwork. Parents are encouraged to support the team positively and volunteer for duties such as scorebench or team manager.


Q: What if my child can’t make a training or game?
A: Please notify your coach or team manager as early as possible so adjustments can be made for the team.


Q: Does BK Owls offer extra development opportunities?
A: Yes. In addition to weekly team training, the club offers skills programs, clinics, and representative pathways through Brian Kerle Basketball for players wanting to take their game further.
